You can not always capture stones by playing a series of ataris. Another way to catch stones is a net (in Japanese it is called a geta).

In the next diagram you see such a situation. You can not catch the stone by playing atari. White would escape by connecting to the single stone.

Black can catch the marked stone by playing move 1. If white would try to escape with moves 2 and 4, black would close the net.
